Different scale, different job

A full rooftop system is typically several kilowatts and installed by an accredited installer, often alongside battery storage and an export arrangement. A plug-in kit is a fraction of that capacity and is designed for self-installation.

Plug-in solar is best understood as a way to shave daytime import, not as a replacement for a rooftop project.

Choosing between them

If you own a suitable roof, plan to stay put and want the largest reduction in your bill, a rooftop system is the bigger lever. If you rent, have no suitable roof, want a lower upfront cost or want to start small, a plug-in kit may fit better.

Some households with existing rooftop solar also use a small kit to reduce residual daytime import.
