How plug-in solar works

A short, honest explanation of the category, what the numbers mean and what you are responsible for.

What plug-in solar is

Plug-in solar describes small, complete solar kits designed to be installed by the householder rather than through a full rooftop project. Typically one or two panels are paired with a supplied microinverter and connection assembly.

The purpose is modest and specific: generate electricity during daylight so you buy less from the grid at that moment.

What a complete kit means

A complete kit is a defined product: specific panels, a specific microinverter, a specified cable and connection method, a mounting solution and its own documentation. It is identified by a model code, not by a general description.

Assembling similar-looking components yourself is not the same thing, and does not carry the same product identity or documentation.

DC panel rating vs AC output

Panels are rated in DC watts under test conditions. What reaches your home is limited by the microinverter's AC rating — in this category commonly listed as 0.8 kW.

That is why a kit can have 1,030 W of panels and a listed 0.8 kW AC output. The extra panel capacity helps in weaker British light rather than raising the ceiling.

How self-consumption reduces your bill

Each kilowatt-hour you use while it is being generated is a kilowatt-hour you did not import at your unit rate. That avoided import is the main financial benefit.

Surplus generation that nothing in the home is using is not stored, and earns nothing unless your supplier has confirmed export eligibility and a rate for the system.

Why daytime electricity use matters

Two identical kits can produce very different savings. A household that is home during the day, works from home, or runs appliances in daylight will use much more of the generation than one that is out from 8am to 6pm.

Shifting laundry, dishwashing or charging into daylight hours is the simplest way to improve the outcome.

Mounting and property considerations

Mounting must follow the manufacturer's instructions, including fixing or ballasting against wind loading. Cable routing should be protected and must not create a hazard.

Renters, leaseholders and flat residents should get written permission from the landlord, freeholder or managing agent before ordering, especially for anything fixed to a balcony, railing or wall.

Registration after connection

Expect a notification or registration step once the system is connected. Prepare the kit model and SKU, product or inverter serial number, invoice, installation address, MPAN and meter serial number, connection date and installation photographs.

Export payments and batteries

Do not assume export payments. Eligibility is separate from the product, varies by supplier, and should be confirmed in writing.

We do not promote batteries as part of plug-in solar kits. Adding storage changes the system, and both the product route and eligibility would need confirming separately.
